Prepare for the 2020 Hurricane Season
North Carolinians are unfortunately far too familiar with the threats and unpredictability posed by hurricane season. The first named storm of the season has already impacted our coast and NOAA predicts 13 – 19 named storms this season in the Atlantic region. As we focus on reopening North Carolina and recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, I urge you to also prepare for the 2020 hurricane season.
Below are four action items I strongly urge you to complete. These steps will help ensure readiness and safety for you and your family should the time come.
- Make a Disaster Kit: You’ll find a list of recommended items at ready.gov/kit. In addition to items traditionally found in your disaster kit, the CDC has recommended including face coverings, soap, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes or general household cleaning supplies, especially if you plan on using a shelter in the event of an emergency. - Create an Evacuation Plan: Plan for your entire family, including pets. Click here to view free templates from the Red Cross to help you plan.
- Review the Red Cross’ Hurricane Safety Checklist and Preparedness Guide: Click here to view the checklist or here to view the preparedness guide.
- Stay Informed: Make sure you know where to find the most up-to-date and accurate information. Click here to view a listing of emergency alert services. You can also download apps from the Red Cross.
