540 Moving Forward

August 23, 2019

A message from Joe Milazzo II, PE, Executive Director at Regional Transportation Alliance:

Today, August 22, 2019, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and a number of environmental organizations, represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), came together and signed an agreement which will allow 540 to proceed to construction in the next few months, while ensuring environmental protection for our region.

See the NCDOT press release here, and the SELC release here.

The acceleration of 540 to I-40 has been the top priority of the regional business community for several years. This new freeway will provide an essential link between metropolitan and rural North Carolina for jobs and opportunity.

The agreement is fantastic news and we applaud each of the parties for coming together to advance this vital connector to Wake, Johnston, Chatham, and nearby counties, while ensuring environmental protection for our region and state.

The agreement will provide a host of environmental benefits for our community, and we thank NCDOT, SELC, and its partners as well as all resource agencies for the collaborative work they have engaged in to create a true multimodal victory for our growing regional community.

Accelerating the connection of 540 to I-40 in southeastern Wake County will remain our top priority until it is under construction. Fortunately, that date is now in sight.
